Looks like about 42 square feet. Mid-range quartz with an eased edge would land around $4,200 to $5,600 installed, including tile removal. I can measure Wednesday at 3 to firm that up.

Quartz is engineered, so it looks the same edge to edge and never needs sealing. Granite and quartzite are cut from the earth, so each slab is different and handles heat better. At the visit we ask how you cook and write down which one fits.

How long countertop replacement takes
Measure to install takes one to two weeks. Your sink is out for about one day.
The old tops stay on until the new ones are ready, so you are never left with bare cabinets for a week. Install day is one visit, plumbing reconnect is the next morning at the latest.

What your countertops are made of
Every slab in your estimate has a brand, a thickness and an edge, so you can compare prices fairly.
The same color name can be a thin budget slab or a thick premium one. We write down the maker, the thickness and the edge profile, which is where two countertop quotes usually differ.
Quartz
Engineered stone from Silestone, Caesarstone, Cambria or MSI Q. Non-porous, never needs sealing, and consistent from one slab to the next.
Granite
Natural stone sealed at install and once every year or two after. Takes hot pans well and hides crumbs in its speckled pattern.
Quartzite
A natural stone harder than granite with the soft veining of marble. It costs more to cut, which shows up in the fabrication line.
Laminate
Wilsonart or Formica sheets on a particleboard core. The lowest price, many patterns, but a hot pan or a knife leaves a mark.
Butcher block
Maple, oak or walnut strips glued into a slab and oiled. Warm and easy to sand smooth, but it needs oil every few months.
Undermount sinks
Stainless steel from Kraus or Kohler, or granite composite from Blanco, mounted under the stone so crumbs wipe straight in.

Older cabinets can be out of level or a little shallower than today's 24-inch standard. We shim, add a build-up strip where needed and check that the new overhang clears the drawers before anything is cut.

Kitchen countertop installation, defined the way we price it.
Kitchen countertop installation is the removal of existing kitchen countertops and the templating, fabrication and installation of new ones, including sink and faucet cutouts, seams, edges and reconnection of the sink. ProBuild Remodeling does it as a licensed general contractor, with a supervisor who measures, a stone fabricator and a setting crew.
The service covers tear-out and disposal, cabinet leveling, laser templating, the slab, edge profile, undermount sink mounting, cooktop and faucet holes, and plumbing reconnection. Backsplash tile, new sinks and faucets are optional lines. It does not replace cabinets, move plumbing or change the layout.
It is for homeowners whose cabinets are solid and well placed but whose counters are stained, cracked, dated or tiled. It is not the right first step if the cabinets are damaged or will be replaced within a year or two, because new stone on old boxes usually has to come off again.

- The unit counters are priced in. A typical L-shaped kitchen has 35 to 50 square feet of counter surface.
- Template
- An exact record of your cabinets and walls, taken by laser, used by the shop to cut the slab to fit.
- Fabrication
- Cutting, edging, polishing and making the sink and cooktop holes in the slab at the shop before install day.
- 3 cm slab
- A slab about 1 1/4 inches thick, the standard for quartz and granite. Thinner 2 cm slabs need a plywood base.
- Eased edge
- A square edge with slightly softened corners. The standard edge included in most prices at no extra cost.
- Undermount sink
- A sink mounted under the stone, so there is no rim to catch crumbs. Needed with most stone and quartz tops.
- Seam
- The joint where two pieces of slab meet. Glued with color-matched epoxy and placed where you approve it.
- Overhang
- The part of the counter that extends past the cabinet, usually 1 1/2 inches, or more at a seating bar.

How much do new kitchen countertops cost?
For 30 to 55 square feet, laminate or butcher block runs about $2,000 to $4,500 installed, mid-range quartz or granite $4,500 to $9,000, and quartzite, marble or premium quartz $9,000 to $16,000. Most of our customers pay $55 to $95 per square foot for quartz, installed.
How long does it take to replace kitchen countertops?
One to two weeks from measuring to install for stone and quartz, and three to five days for laminate. The install itself takes one day, and the sink is usually back in use within 24 hours.
Can new countertops go on my old cabinets?
Yes, if the cabinets are solid and can be brought to level. We check every base at the template visit. If a box is damaged or sagging, we repair or replace that box first, because stone will crack over a weak spot.
Is quartz or granite better for a kitchen?
Quartz never needs sealing and resists stains, so it suits busy kitchens with kids. Granite handles heat better and each slab is unique, but it should be sealed every year or two. Both last decades with normal care.
Will my backsplash be damaged when you remove the counters?
Often, yes. Tile set on the old counter usually cracks along the bottom row. We tell you at the visit if it can be saved, and we price a new tile or slab backsplash as a separate option.
Can I pick my own slab?
Yes. For natural stone we meet you at the stone yard, you choose the exact slab and we tag it. For quartz you choose the color from full-size slabs, since every slab of the same color looks nearly identical.
Do I need a new sink with stone countertops?
Only if your current sink is a drop-in, since stone and quartz need an undermount. A good stainless or composite undermount sink adds $300 to $900 installed. Existing undermount sinks in good shape can be reused.
Where will the seams be?
A seam is needed when the counter is longer than a slab or turns a corner. We show you the seam locations on the template drawing before cutting and place them away from the sink and the most used spot.
