Window replacement is the removal of existing windows and the installation of new ones built to the size of each opening, either as an insert inside the old frame or as a full-frame replacement down to the rough opening. - How much heat escapes through the whole window. Lower is better; 0.30 or less is good, 0.22 or less suits cold climates.
- SHGC
- Solar heat gain coefficient: how much of the sun's heat the glass lets in. Lower numbers keep rooms cooler in hot climates.
- Low-E coating
- A thin metal oxide layer on the glass that reflects heat back toward its source and blocks most fading UV light.
- Insert window
- A window made to fit inside the existing frame. Keeps interior trim and siding untouched, and costs less to install.
- Full-frame
- Removing the old window down to the studs and installing a complete new unit, with new flashing and trim.
- NFRC label
- The sticker on each new window that lists its tested U-factor, SHGC and air leakage, so ratings can be compared.
- Egress window
- A bedroom window large enough to climb out of in a fire, with a clear opening of about 5.7 square feet on upper floors.
- Tempered glass
- Safety glass that breaks into small pieces. Required near doors, tubs, showers and in windows close to the floor.

How long does window replacement take?
Windows take three to eight weeks to arrive because they are built to size. Installation takes about an hour per window for inserts, so a whole house of 15 windows is usually done in one to three days.
What is the difference between insert and full-frame replacement?

Which is better, vinyl, fiberglass or wood windows?
Vinyl gives the best value and needs no painting. Fiberglass is stiffer and more stable in heat, with narrower frames. Wood-clad looks right in older and period homes and costs the most. All three perform well when installed properly.
Will new windows lower my energy bills?
Yes, most when replacing single-pane or leaky aluminum windows. Savings depend on climate and the old windows, and ENERGY STAR puts the average around 12 percent. Comfort improves right away: fewer drafts and no cold glass.
Can windows be replaced in winter?
Yes. We replace one opening at a time, so each room is open to the cold for about an hour, and we close it before moving on. Foams and sealants we use cure at low temperatures, and the heat stays on throughout.
Do replacement windows need a permit?
It depends on your town. Many require one for any window replacement, others only when the opening size changes. We check the local rules, file the permit when needed and schedule the inspection as part of the job.
What are the rules for bedroom egress windows?
Most codes require every bedroom to have a window you can climb out of: about 5.7 square feet of clear opening, at least 24 inches high and 20 inches wide, with the sill no more than 44 inches above the floor.
