Should we start with the bathroom or the whole house?
Start with a whole-house walk-through even if you only build the bathroom now. It costs nothing extra, it ranks every risk in the house, and it makes sure the bathroom work fits later changes like a wider hallway or a ramp.
Is a walk-in tub or an accessible shower better for my parent?
A curbless shower suits most people: nothing to step over, no waiting while water fills and drains, and room for a seat and a helper. A walk-in tub suits someone who needs warm soaks for pain and can sit through the fill and drain time.
Stair lift or main-floor bedroom: which makes more sense?
A stair lift costs $3,500 to $7,000 for a straight flight and installs in a day, which suits someone who can sit and stand with little help. A main-floor bedroom and bath costs far more but removes the stairs entirely, better if a wheelchair is likely.
Ramp or lift for the front entry?
A ramp is the simplest answer when the entry is under about 30 inches high and there is yard to run it along. Above that, a ramp becomes very long with several landings, and a vertical platform lift in a small footprint is often better.
Which safety change can be done fastest?
Grab bars, stair rails, lighting and a comfort-height toilet take one to five days. A modular aluminum ramp or a straight stair lift can often be installed within days of the visit. A curbless shower takes about two weeks.
Can I plan all of this for my parent from another state?
Yes. You can join the visit and milestone checks by video, receive the plan and daily photos, and approve every change in writing. Your parent is involved as much as they want, and the quote goes to both of you.
