How a refacing question starts

Refacing only works on sound boxes, so the first thing we ask for is a look inside. The supervisor reads the photo, tells you honestly if the boxes qualify and books a visit with door samples.

How long refacing takes
Refacing takes three to six days in your kitchen. The doors are made while you wait at home.
Doors and fronts are made to your measurements in three to five weeks. The work in the house starts only when every piece has arrived and been checked.

What refaced cabinets are made of
Your estimate names the door maker and the veneer, so two refacing prices can be compared.
Refacing prices vary mostly with the door material and the veneer thickness. Both are written into your estimate, with the brand, so you know exactly which finish you are paying for.
Rigid thermofoil
A vinyl layer heat-formed over MDF doors. Wipes clean and resists moisture, but should stay a few inches clear of self-cleaning oven heat.
Real wood veneer
A thin sheet of oak, maple, cherry or walnut pressed onto the frames with a peel-and-stick or contact adhesive, then stained or painted.
Solid wood doors
Shaker, slab or raised panel doors in maple, oak or poplar, built to your exact sizes and finished at the factory in a hard coat.
Soft-close hinges
Concealed Blum or Salice hinges that close the door gently and adjust in three directions, replacing old hinges that show outside.
Full-extension slides
Drawer slides that let the whole drawer come out, with soft-close so drawers never slam. Fitted when drawer boxes are replaced.
Hardware
Pulls and knobs in brushed nickel, matte black or brass from makers like Top Knobs and Amerock, placed with a template so they line up.

Cabinet refacing, defined the way we quote it.
Cabinet refacing is the process of keeping existing cabinet boxes in place and replacing everything visible: new doors and drawer fronts, a new veneer on the face frames and exposed sides, and new hinges and hardware. ProBuild Remodeling does it as a licensed general contractor with its own refacing specialists and one supervisor per kitchen.
The service covers measuring, door and veneer samples at your home, frame preparation, veneer, doors, drawer fronts, hinges, pulls, crown and toe kick, plus optional drawer boxes, pull-outs and an added cabinet. It does not change the layout, move the sink or replace countertops unless a separate countertop line is added to the estimate.
It is for homeowners whose cabinet boxes are sound plywood or solid wood and whose layout works, but whose doors look dated or worn. It is not for boxes made of swollen particleboard, kitchens where the layout itself is the problem, or cabinets that are falling off the wall.
Refacing words on your estimate
- Face frame
- The wood frame on the front of the cabinet that doors hinge onto. Refacing covers it with new veneer to match the doors.
- Veneer
- A thin sheet of real wood or vinyl bonded to the frames and exposed cabinet sides so they match the new doors.
- Rigid thermofoil
- A vinyl skin formed over MDF under heat and pressure. One smooth surface, easy to wipe, usually sold in solid colors.
- Shaker door
- A flat center panel inside a simple square frame. The most requested refacing style because it fits almost any kitchen.
- Slab door
- A flat door with no frame or panel. Clean and modern, and the easiest to keep clean in a busy kitchen.
- End panel
- A finished panel on the exposed side of a cabinet run, covered to match the doors so the old side does not show.
- Drawer box
- The box behind the drawer front. Refacing can keep it or replace it with a dovetail box on new slides.
- Hardware template
- A jig that marks the same hole position on every door, so all the pulls line up across the kitchen.

How much does cabinet refacing cost?
A typical kitchen with 25 to 35 doors and fronts costs $6,000 to $10,000 in thermofoil and $10,000 to $17,000 in real wood veneer. Adding drawer conversions, pull-outs or an extra cabinet brings it to $17,000 to $27,000. The door count drives the price more than the room size.
Is refacing cheaper than new cabinets?
Usually by half or more. Semi-custom cabinets installed with new tops cost $18,000 to $34,000 for a typical kitchen, while wood veneer refacing of the same kitchen costs $10,000 to $17,000, and the counters, plumbing and walls are left alone.
How long does cabinet refacing take?
Three to six days of work in the house, after three to five weeks for the doors to be made. The counters and sink stay in place, so most families keep cooking on most evenings during the work.
How do I know if my cabinets can be refaced?
Open the sink cabinet and look at the side wall. If you see layered plywood or solid wood and the bottom is firm, the boxes almost always qualify. Particleboard that is swollen or crumbling does not. A photo is enough for a first answer.
Can refacing change the layout of my cabinets?
Only a little. We can turn shelves into drawers, add a wall cabinet or pantry, or remove a cabinet for a dishwasher. Moving the sink or adding an island is beyond refacing and belongs in a cabinet replacement or a remodel.
Does refacing include new countertops?
Not by default. Most refacing jobs keep the existing tops. If you want new counters, we add them as a separate line and install them after the doors, so the new tops are not scratched during the work.
How long does refaced cabinetry last?
Wood veneer and solid wood doors last as long as new cabinets when the boxes underneath are sound. Thermofoil lasts ten to fifteen years in normal use, but can peel if it sits next to high oven heat without a heat shield.
Is refacing messy or dusty?
Much less than a remodel. The frames are sanded by hand with dust extraction, and there is no demolition. We cover counters and floors each morning and vacuum before we leave, so the kitchen is usable every evening.
