Electric. There is a linen closet next to the hall bath, it is on an outside wall.
That is a good spot. The bath gives us a drain and water nearby and the outside wall gives the dryer a short vent. Can you send a photo of the closet and one of the basement ceiling under it?

- Standpipe
- The vertical drain pipe the washer hose drops into. It needs the right height and a trap, or the washer can overflow or siphon.
- Washer outlet box
- A recessed box in the wall that holds the hot and cold valves and the drain, so hoses do not stick out behind the machine.
- Rigid dryer vent
- Smooth metal duct from the dryer to the outside. It catches less lint than foil hose and is what fire codes and dryer makers call for.
- Drain pan
- A shallow tray under the washer piped to a drain. Required in some places when the laundry sits over a finished room.
- GFCI outlet
- An outlet that cuts power in a split second if it senses current leaking to water. Required near laundry sinks.
- 240-volt circuit
- The heavier circuit an electric dryer needs. Moving the laundry means running a new one from the panel to the new spot.
- Ventless dryer
- A condenser or heat pump dryer that needs no outside vent, only a drain or a water tank. Useful in closets and condos.
- Rough-in
- The pipes, wires and vent installed inside the walls before they are closed. Inspected before the drywall goes back up.

Can you move a laundry room from the basement to upstairs?
Usually, yes. The best spot is a closet or room near a bathroom, so the drain and water are close, on an outside wall, so the dryer vent is short. We check the floor framing, add a drain pan and pull plumbing and electrical permits.
How long will I be without a washer and dryer?
About two days for a refresh and eight to ten days for a full remodel. For a relocation, the old laundry keeps working until the new one passes inspection, so the gap is usually one or two days. Plan a laundromat run or two.
Does a laundry room need a sink?
Code does not require one, but most clients who add one use it every week for soaking, hand washing and rinsing boots. If space is tight, a narrow 15 to 18 inch utility sink fits beside most machines.
What is the best flooring for a laundry room?
Porcelain tile or waterproof vinyl plank, installed over a membrane so a leak cannot reach the subfloor. Avoid solid hardwood and laminate that is not rated waterproof. Tile costs more but survives a flood that would ruin most other floors.
Can I put a stacked washer and dryer in a closet?
Yes, if the closet is at least 30 inches deep and wide enough for the model, with a louvered or open door for airflow. It needs a drain, water valves, the right circuit and either an outside vent or a ventless dryer.
How far can a dryer vent run?
Most dryer makers allow about 35 feet of straight rigid duct, minus about 5 feet for every elbow. Longer runs trap lint and overheat the dryer. If the new spot is too far from an outside wall, a heat pump dryer avoids the vent entirely.
Is a laundry room on the second floor a flood risk?
It is a risk only without protection. We install a drain pan piped to a drain, braided steel hoses and a leak sensor that shuts off the water automatically, and we waterproof the floor under the machines.
