Hi, we want the living room, hallway and the stairwell painted, walls and trim. The stairwell is two stories and we cannot reach it.

Built a long time ago, maybe older than my parents. Trim is glossy white, chipping in a few spots.
Then we will test the trim for lead before we sand anything and follow the lead-safe rules if it is positive. Glossy trim also needs a bonding primer so new paint grips. Can you send a close-up of a chipped spot?

Use flat sheens on walls that need to hide flaws. Use satin or semi-gloss where hands and water hit.
Sheen is how much light the paint reflects. Lower sheens hide dents and patches; higher sheens wipe clean and stand up to moisture. We pick a sheen for each surface on your estimate, and these six rules decide most of them.

How long it takes
Main living areas take two to four days, and you sleep in your own bed every night.
One or two rooms take a day or two. A whole interior takes one to two weeks, painted in sections so you always have working rooms. Low-odor paint means you can use most rooms the same evening.

If lead is found on trim, doors or windows, we follow the EPA lead-safe rules for any work over six square feet per room: plastic sheeting, misting, no dry sanding and HEPA cleanup. It adds time and cost, and you see both lines.

Interior painting is the preparation and coating of a home's interior walls, ceilings, trim and doors, including moving and covering furniture, patching holes and cracks, caulking, priming stains and glossy surfaces, and applying two coats of a named paint line. ProBuild Remodeling performs it as a licensed contractor, EPA lead-safe certified for older homes.
The service covers one or two rooms, the main living areas with trim and doors, and whole interiors, with kitchen cabinet painting as an option. It includes minor drywall and plaster patching. Large drywall repairs are priced on the drywall installation page, and wallpaper removal, murals and faux finishes are quoted only on request.
It is for homeowners refreshing tired rooms, buyers painting before they move in, families who need washable walls and sellers preparing a listing. It is not for touching up a single wall with leftover paint, which you can do yourself, or for exterior siding and trim, which have their own page.

- Painting a clean line by hand with a brush where walls meet ceilings, trim and other colors, before rolling.
- Sheen
- How much light the dried paint reflects, from flat and matte to eggshell, satin, semi-gloss and gloss.
- Bonding primer
- A primer made to stick to glossy or slick surfaces, like old oil-based trim, so the new paint does not peel.
- Stain-blocking primer
- A primer, often shellac-based, that seals water stains, smoke and marker so they do not bleed through paint.
- Enamel
- A hard-drying paint for trim, doors and cabinets that levels out brush marks and resists chips and scuffs.
- VOC
- Volatile organic compounds, the solvents that cause paint smell. Low-VOC and zero-VOC paints keep odor low.
- Two coats
- The standard for even color and full hide. One coat over a new color almost always leaves thin spots and lap marks.

How much does interior painting cost?
A typical room costs $400 to $1,200 for walls, more with ceiling, trim and doors. One or two rooms fully painted run $800 to $3,000, main living areas $3,500 to $9,000, and a whole interior of 1,800 to 2,800 square feet $9,000 to $22,000.
How long does it take to paint the inside of a house?
One or two rooms take a day or two. Main living areas with trim and a stairwell take two to four days. A whole interior takes one to two weeks, painted in sections. Prep is often a third of the time, and it is the part you notice later.
Is Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore better?
Both make excellent top lines: Sherwin-Williams Emerald and Duration, Benjamin Moore Aura and Regal Select. Differences are small; color availability and the store near you often decide it. We name the exact line on your estimate so quotes can be compared.
Do I need two coats of paint?
Almost always. Two coats give even color, full hide and the durability the paint maker rates. One coat can work only when you repaint the same color over clean, sound paint in good light. Changing color, especially dark to light, sometimes needs a primer as well.
What is the best paint finish for walls?
Eggshell suits most living rooms and bedrooms: soft, and it wipes clean. Matte hides flaws on old walls but marks more easily. Satin suits hallways, kids' rooms and bathrooms. Semi-gloss is for trim and doors.
What do lead-safe rules mean for painting an older home?
In homes old enough to have lead paint, the EPA requires certified firms to contain the work area, avoid dry sanding and open-flame removal, and clean with HEPA vacuums when more than six square feet per room is disturbed. We test first and follow the rules if lead is found.
Do I need to move furniture before the painters come?
No. We move and cover furniture as part of the job. Please take down pictures, clear shelves and put away small valuables and breakables. Very heavy items like pianos stay in place and get wrapped, and we paint around them.
How long does interior paint take to dry?
Most latex wall paint is dry to the touch in an hour and ready for a second coat in two to four hours. It takes about two to four weeks to fully cure, so wait before scrubbing walls or pushing furniture tight against them.
