A whole house takes two to three weeks, once the sheathing is inspected.

Siding installation, defined the way we price it.
Siding installation is the application of a new exterior cladding system to walls that have no siding on them yet: housewrap or a drainage layer, flashing at every opening, trim, soffit and the siding itself. ProBuild Remodeling installs it as a licensed contractor on additions, garages, new houses and walls already stripped to the sheathing.
The service covers wrap, flashing tape, kickout flashing, trim, soffit, siding in vinyl, engineered wood or fiber cement, fasteners, caulk and cleanup. It does not include framing, sheathing, windows or gutters unless they are written into the scope. Tearing off existing siding is a different job with its own page, because what is found underneath changes the price.
It is for homeowners building an addition or a new house, and for owners who have already removed old siding and need the walls closed in. It is not for patching a few damaged boards, which we handle as a siding repair, or for projects where the builder already includes siding in a fixed contract.
The words you will see on your siding estimate
- Housewrap
- A weather barrier sheet over the sheathing that stops liquid water but lets vapor out. Tyvek and Typar are common brands.
- Flashing tape
- Self-adhesive membrane that seals window and door edges to the wrap. It must lap shingle-style so water runs outward.
- Kickout flashing
- A small metal diverter where a roof edge meets a wall. It throws roof water away from the siding instead of into it.
- Rainscreen
- A gap of a few millimeters behind the siding, made with a mesh mat or strips, that lets trapped water drain and dry.
- Square
- The unit siding is sold in: 100 square feet of wall coverage. A typical house takes 15 to 30 squares.
- J-channel
- A trim piece shaped like the letter J that frames windows, doors and rooflines and hides the cut ends of vinyl siding.
- Soffit
- The panels under the roof overhang. Vented soffit lets air into the attic, which keeps it drier and cooler.
- Reveal
- The visible height of each siding course, usually 4 to 7 inches. Matching the reveal is key when new meets old.

Do I need housewrap under new siding?
Yes. Building codes require a water-resistive barrier behind siding, and every major siding maker requires one for the warranty. Housewrap with taped seams, plus flashing tape at openings, is what keeps rain that gets past the siding out of the wall.
Can you match new siding on an addition to my existing house?
Often, yes. Most vinyl and fiber cement profiles stay in production for years. Faded color is the harder part, so we hold samples against the sunny side of the house at the visit and tell you honestly whether matching or contrasting will look better.
How long does it take to side an addition?
A one-story addition or garage takes five to eight working days once the sheathing is ready. A whole new house takes two to four weeks depending on size, material and the number of windows and corners.
Should siding go on before or after windows?
Windows go in first, flashed to the housewrap, and the siding and trim follow. If your windows are already in, we check how they were taped before covering anything, because fixing flashing after siding is on costs far more.
What is the best siding for a new addition?
The one that fits the house and the climate. Vinyl is the lowest cost and easy to match, engineered wood looks like painted wood for less, and fiber cement lasts longest and resists fire. We compare all three in the estimate.
Does new siding need a permit?
In many towns, yes, especially on additions and new builds where siding is part of the building permit. Some inspectors want to see the housewrap before it is covered. We check the local rule and handle the permit and the inspection.
